About DirtToDeck
DirtToDeck is an independent project. It offers free calculators for home and yard projects in the United States, such as working out how much mulch or how many cubic yards of material a job needs.
What the site does
You describe the space you want to cover, and the calculator gives you the volume and an amount you can use when talking to a supplier. Calculators use US customary units by default, with metric available where it helps.
How the calculators are built
- Formulas are shown. Each calculator page explains the math it uses, with a worked example, so you can check it yourself.
- Calculations are tested. The calculation code is separate from the page and has automated tests with known answers.
- Full precision, rounded for display. Results are calculated without rounding and only rounded when shown to you.
- Sources are named. When a page states a depth, density or other specification, it names where that came from, such as a university extension service. If there is no reliable source for a number, we leave it out.
Results are planning estimates
The numbers are estimates to help you plan and budget. Real materials settle, compact and vary, and real sites are rarely perfectly regular. Confirm quantities with your supplier or a professional before you order. See the disclaimer for more.
